Six Things That Make a Bedroom Feel Expensive

Expensive-looking rooms are rarely expensive rooms. They're edited ones. Six things that do most of the work:

01   Light from below, never above

The fastest way to make any room look cheap is to light it from the ceiling. Two lamps at roughly hip height, warm bulbs, and the same room reads completely differently.

This is also the only item here that improves your sleep as a side effect, which is why we keep repeating it.

02   One material repeated

Wood, or linen, or ceramic — pick one and let it appear three or four times. Rooms feel chaotic when every object is from a different world. The repetition is what reads as considered.

03   Nothing plastic in the line of sight

Not a design rule so much as an observation. Cables, chargers, packaging, the white plastic thing that came free with something else. They're invisible until you photograph the room, and then they're the only thing you see.

04   A surface with almost nothing on it

A nightstand holding a lamp, a book and one other object looks expensive. The same nightstand holding nine things looks like storage. The empty space is doing the work, not the objects.

05   Curtains that reach the floor

The single most common mistake in rented flats: curtains that stop at the windowsill and start at the frame. Hung high and long, even cheap fabric reads as generous. This is the one worth spending a Saturday on.

06   Bedding that has been used

The hotel-taut bed photographs well and feels like nobody lives there. Linen that creases, a blanket that's been thrown back — that's what makes a room look inhabited rather than staged.

It's also the reason our own photographs have an unmade bed in them. Not laziness. Mostly.

The one that costs money

Weight on the bed. A properly heavy blanket is the only item on this list you can't fake with an afternoon and a screwdriver, and it's the one you feel rather than see.
