What We'd Change First in a Rented Flat

Most bedroom advice assumes you own the room. Ours didn't, for years, and the good news is that almost everything worth doing is reversible.

In the order we'd do it:

01   Change the bulbs

Ten minutes, under twenty pounds, reversible in ten more. Swap cool white for warm — look for 2700K or lower on the box. The same fittings, the same room, a completely different evening.

Take the old ones out and keep them in a drawer for when you move.

02   Add a lamp, stop using the ceiling

You cannot rewire a rented flat and you don't need to. One floor lamp and one table lamp, plugged into existing sockets, and the overhead switch never gets touched after nine.

03   Deal with the light coming in

Rented curtains are almost always too thin, too short and mounted too low. Two options that don't damage anything: a blackout liner that clips onto the existing curtains, or a tension rod inside the window recess with a heavier panel.

If neither works, a mask. It's less elegant and it's instant.

04   Deal with the noise

You can't soundproof someone else's wall. You can add sound rather than remove it — steady noise masks the irregular kind, which is what actually wakes you. A machine, a fan, earplugs. All under fifty pounds, all leave with you.

05   Move the bed if you can

Free. Away from the radiator, away from the shared wall, out of the direct line of the door. Most rented bedrooms are arranged by whoever moved the furniture in, not by anyone who slept there.

06   Move the charger to another room

Free, four seconds, and of everything on this list the one we'd defend hardest.

What we wouldn't bother with

Anything requiring a drill, paint, or a conversation with a letting agent. The return on those is low and you're leaving in eighteen months.

The whole list above costs less than a piece of furniture, fits in two boxes, and comes with you to the next flat — which is the right way to think about a rented bedroom.
